Pellet Die Maintenance Schedule

Published 2026-04-08Updated 2026-05-274 min readBy D Sharma

Ring dies are the highest-wear part on a biomass pellet plant. On paddy-straw feedstock, the silica content of the residue is materially harder on dies than sawdust or husk. Industry rule-of-thumb: paddy-straw dies wear at 1.5× the rate of sawdust dies under equivalent throughput.

Our recommended inspection schedule: visual inspection of the die face every shift change (8–12 hours); dimensional check of channel diameter and roller clearance every 200 operating hours; hardness check at 500-hour intervals using a portable Rockwell tester. Replace the die when channel diameter exceeds nameplate by 0.3 mm, when pellet density drops below 1.10 kg/L on a sustained-output sample, or when fines fraction at press outlet exceeds 2%.

Two operating disciplines extend die life materially. First, lubrication of the rollers per the published schedule — every 4 operating hours for grease-fed roller bearings under continuous-duty operation. Second, moisture control on the press inlet — at 10–12% inlet moisture, die wear is minimised; above 14%, the wear rate accelerates.

Replacement dies are ex-stock at Sardulgarh in Yulong pattern at ₹1,00,000 per piece, MOQ 5. Same-week dispatch to Punjab, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan. For non-standard die patterns, custom forging is in-house with a 6–8 week lead time.
